How to calculate car insurance rates in Manitoba

Car insurance in Manitoba is provided through the province’s Autopac program. Your Autopac car insurance rate is calculated based on the following factors:

  • Where you live (MPI divides Manitoba into four territories)
  • How you use your vehicle, whether it’s occasionally or daily for commuting
  • The type of car you drive (its make, model, and safety features)
  • Your driving record

Unlike provinces with private car insurance markets, Manitoba drivers are not rated based on their age, gender, or employment status. However, young drivers still pay more for car insurance than experienced drivers, due to their lack of insurance history.

To get an idea of what you might pay for insurance, use MPI’s car insurance estimator tool for Manitoba drivers.

The average monthly cost of car insurance in Manitoba

According to the Insurance Bureau of Canada, Manitoba has the fourth highest car insurance rates in Canada. Drivers here pay roughly $1,140 per year for car insurance, making the monthly cost of car insurance in Manitoba roughly $117. Other provinces with public car insurance systems include B.C. ($1,832/year), Saskatchewan ($1,235/year), and Quebec ($717/year).

MPI’s car insurance cost calculator gives Manitoba drivers a preview of what they might pay for insurance.

Mandatory car insurance coverages in Manitoba

All-purpose car insurance from Autopac includes the following:

Third-party liability:

  • Protects you if you are legally responsible for damage or injury to another person.
  • Drivers must buy at least $200,000 in liability insurance.
  • You have the option to increase your third-party liability protection to $1 million, $2 million, $5 million, $7 million or $10 million.
  • Coverage can be transferred to someone borrowing your car as long as they have the owner’s permission.

Personal Injury Protection Plan:

  • All residents have injury coverage through Autopac, regardless if they’re a driver or not. It guarantees accident benefits if you’re injured in a traffic collision.
  • For Manitobans, there is no reduction in the level of benefit based on the degree of fault for the accident.
  • Personal Injury Protection Plan (PIPP) coverage is valid for Manitobans travelling in Canada and the United States. It also covers visitors to Manitoba who are injured in an accident in Manitoba.

All-perils coverage:

  • Covers your car against accidental loss or damage anywhere in Canada and in the U.S.
  • Will cover physical damage caused by vandalism, theft, flooding hail, storms, and explosions.

Disability benefits:

  • 90% of net wages based on gross annual income of maximum, up to a maximum $101,000/year.

Impairment benefits:

  • Minimum $821/week, maximum total of $164,181 for non-catastrophic injury; maximum $259,245 for catastrophic injury (includes indemnity for non-catastrophic injury of $164,181).

Death benefits:

  • Benefits for partners depend on the wage and age of the deceased; minimum $65,674; non-dependent children or parents receive $14,625.

Funeral expense benefits:

  • $8,951 (maximum)

Auto insurance savings for Manitoba drivers

MPI provides drivers who own multiple cars with a way to save on car insurance. The public insurer advises drivers who use more than two cars for work, school or business to insure the car that costs the most to insurance with all-purpose insurance and the others with cheaper pleasure insurance (low annual mileage insurance).

Other tips on how to save on car insurance in Manitoba

There are many ways to get cheap auto insurance in Manitoba:

  • Pay premiums in full and on time (partial payment can open a world of trouble if you make a claim).
  • Maintain a good driving record.
  • Complete a certified driver training program.
